The two villages – Manayathadam and Kaithappara in Idukki, Kerala, South India, are located in a protected forest region. The villages have no electricity and rely exclusively on solar energy. This type of beans was originally brought in from the Philippines and the Indonesian island Amboyna in 1798 by The British East India Company, catering to the Europeans living in India.
